The Narooma Lions Prostate Cancer Awareness Program
Cancer of the prostate is the most common cancer among men, and is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in men, after lung cancer.
Narooma Lions Club is proud to work closely with Lions Australia and the New South Wales Cancer Council to run an extensive Prostate Cancer Awareness Program during 2011.
‘The program will make men aware of the importance of early diagnosis of this cancer, and encourage them to seek treatment early to prevent death from this cancer,’ said Lesley Connor, President of Narooma Lions.
‘Narooma Lions will also hold a public forum in the middle of the year, in conjunction with medical practitioners, to reinforce the importance of early diagnosis of this cancer,’ Ms Connor said.
Nearly 80 percent of all prostate tumours are diagnosed when they are still in the local or regional stages. The survival rate for all stages of prostate cancer combined has increased from 67 percent to 92 percent over the past 20 years, mainly because more men are now diagnosed earlier in the course of the disease than in the past.

A man’s risk of developing prostate cancer increases with age. The disease can occur at any age, but it is most often found in men older than 50, and more than 75 percent of tumours are found in men over age 65.
‘A reason for an increase in the rate of this cancer is simple,’ Ms Connor said. ‘It is because more men are living longer, and into old age.’
